Product selection

What it is and what it does

An incremental linear scale repeats optical graduations along an axis. The readhead measures changes in position from that periodic reference; separate reference marks can establish a machine coordinate.

When to choose it

Choose it when the machine can establish an axis reference and the reader is compatible with the physical pitch, track arrangement and optical contrast.

How it differs from related products

The manufactured pitch is a physical period. The reported increment depends on how the readhead and electronics subdivide it; a finer displayed increment is not a full-travel accuracy value.

What can be customised

Grating pitch, clear/opaque ratio, measuring length, track widths, reference-mark arrangement and mounting datum can be defined independently.

What you receive

A patterned glass scale with the selected measuring length, code or grating layout, reference marks and component inspection records.

Pattern architecture and system fit

A disc or scale is the passive optical reference inside a larger encoder system. The artwork, readhead and mounting datum must be designed together so that the manufactured pattern is read in the intended direction and at the intended contrast.

Pattern and readhead interface
PropertySpecification
Pattern architecturePeriodic chrome lines with optional reference marks
Signal definitionManufactured pitch is specified separately from interpolated electrical resolution
Critical geometryPitch, duty cycle, active length, line direction and reference-mark datum
Readhead interfaceWavelength, sensing gap, aperture and contrast matched to the readhead

System resolution and system accuracy are separate from the manufactured CD and outline values. Interpolation, bearing runout, eccentricity, alignment and electronics contribute to the final error budget.

Periodic chrome-on-glass linear scales for displacement sensing, with reference marks and track geometry matched to the readhead.

Substrate & optical configuration

Specify substrate material and geometry together with the operating wavelength. For transmissive reading, define clear-area transmission and opaque-track density. Reflective reading also needs the high/low reflectance pair and illumination geometry. Optical contrast must match the readhead, not only the appearance of the part.

Selection notes

Incremental linear scales use periodic lines to provide an optical reference for relative linear displacement.

Pitch, transparent-to-opaque duty cycle, active length and reference marks define the pattern. Head optics and interpolation determine system output.

Information for your inquiry

Pitch, active length, reference marks, track width, substrate and readhead gap.

Is physical pitch the electrical resolution?

Pitch is the pattern repeat distance. Electrical resolution also depends on phase reading, multiplication and interpolation settings.
